Most people should apply for Original Medicare during the seven-month Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) surrounding their birthday.
Suppose you don’t sign up for Original Medicare when first eligible and don’t qualify for an exception (like coverage through an employer). In that case, you can enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B during the Open Enrollment Period (OEP), which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. You may have to pay a higher Part A and/or Part B monthly premium penalty for late enrollment.
Most Individuals need to sign up for Medicare Part A, hospital insurance, and Medicare Part B, medical insurance when they reach 65. You can do so online or through your Social Security Office.
You can sign up for Part D, prescription drug coverage, change Medicare Advantage plans, and switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage during the appropriate open enrollment periods.
